Derek Lam Elsa Python Clutch

Sorry, Derek Lam, I’m just not buying what you’re selling here. I know, I know - you’re trying to make a little niche for yourself among the scads of smaller high-end bag designers out there. And it can’t be an easy thing, because convincing people to spend a couple grand on a bag from a designer that doesn’t have much handbag cache is a bit of a challenge, to say the least. But that doesn’t excuse what we have here.

When you’re dealing with quirky, non-symmetrical designs, there’s a really thin line between one that works and one that doesn’t, and I don’t think that the Derek Lam Elsa Python Clutch does. The material and color are both beautiful, and some of the asymmetry is well-done, but beyond that, Lam totally loses me. The half-covered silver ring doesn’t appear to serve any kind of functional purpose at all, and things always go off the rails in handbag design when you start adding elements that would normally be functional that don’t serve any functional value. But I think that the final nail in this little clutch’s coffin is the enormous, luggage-like handle at the top. Not only is the material not the same as the rest of the clutch, but the style is also different. It’s traditional and staid while the clutch is edgy and hip, and on top of that, the proportion of the two doesn’t even work. Buy through Barney’s for $1450.

Prada Cervo Shine Hobo

I have never been much of a fan of Prada. Not for any particular reason; they’re just not my thing, but I can understand why others are so passionate about them. The leather is usually supple and beautiful and I’ve heard wonderful things about their quality and construction. Nice leather, classic shapes, and durability - you can’t ask for a whole lot more than that, even if they don’t exactly tickle my fancy.

Which is why I can very much respect that a lot of people will love the Prada Cervo Shine Hobo, even though it’s not absolutely wowing me. It has a ton of factors working in its favor - buttery soft deerskin leather, accessible outside pockets, and a functional and wearable shape that would be great for work or play. I think what’s stopping me from being more enthusiastic is the color. I’m not much for tan, and if they gave me this in a grape-y purple or a slate grey, I’d probably be turning cartwheels right now. But for those of you out there that love tan, I may have found your new favorite everyday bag. Buy through Saks for $1650.

Gucci Hysteria Bag

I fell head over heels in love with the ultimately expensive Gucci Crocodile Hysteria Bag. The price is not practical for me at all, but the color, the feel, the shape, was beautiful. I kept staring at it and studying it and I truly think the SA thought he made a huge sale that day. Unfortunately I was just an oogler, not a real buyer. And last week I went to Gucci Bal Harbor and fell in love again, but this time that bag is more affordable, relatively speaking. The Gucci Hysteria Bag is designed with yellow/white patchwork on the front of the bag with black leather on the back. The leather is ultimately sumptuous. I mean super soft, the kind that just melts as you touch it. I kept grabbing the bag thinking it was from Bottega Veneta, not Gucci. This bag has me back on Gucci’s side, in love with a bag that is absolutely fierce. The body is very slouchy, actually allowing the bag to fold over if you carry it with the messenger strap. The Hysteria bags feature Gucci Crest detail. There was still one more of these available at Gucci Bal Harbor but you can also find it online via Bergdorf Goodman for $3150 or plain patent via Saks for $1790.

Gucci New Jackie Large Hobo

Finally, a new Gucci bag that I don’t hate. In fact, I really don’t hate it! I quite like it! Not only that, but it’s something that I’ve been wanting them to try for so long. They took the staid, structured, maybe a bit boring traditional Jackie hobo and made the Gucci New Jackie Large Hobo. It’s a slouchy, modern, younger version of a bag that everyone knows and that really needed an update. They did one thing that I hate, though - they gave it an extra, completely unneccessary, annoying strap. The bag can already easily be carried on the shoulder by its natural handle, and the extra strap is only a few inches longer and makes the bag hang oddly when used. Since the original strap is not a separate, attached piece but part of the bag’s structure, it looks like it would be all up in the wearer’s armpit when using the extra strap.

Luckily, this bag has clips that make the shoulder strap detachable, and that’s the first thing that you should do when you get this bag. Other than that, I think they did a great job. I even love the color; a burnt orange is a great, neutral substitute from boring brown, and I’ve been lusting after a similar shade since Balenciaga made a similar one (rouille) in 2006. So fret not, ladies, Gucci hasn’t gone crazy, despite their disappointing Resort collection. This slouchy, boho take on a structured classic is a good start to making up for lost time. Buy through Saks for $3100.

Do you want to be as fashionable as Michelle Obama?

The choices you've made thus far demonstrate traits that will be useful in a first lady: practicality, flexibility, a sense of humor, a sense of glamour. Yours is a particularly American style—relaxed, confident, classic, and not overly label-happy. You've embraced American designers, from populist low-cost outfitters like White House/Black Market (the awkwardly named makers of the now famous $148 dress you wore on The View) to big-gun American designers like Narciso Rodriguez (who made the cranberry wool shift you wore at the debate in Nashville) and new stars like Thakoon Panichgul (who made the print dress you had on in Denver).

You've also embraced the casual chic of some classically American looks. I love the way you wear your belt over a fitted sweater, like Mary Tyler Moore. I love that you wear flat shoes with a full skirt: so Maria from West Side Story.

I even love that you make the occasional mistake. It shows that you are open-minded, even risk-taking. But the white floral-print J. Crew dress you wore to the University of Mississippi debate was too much. White is rarely good on camera and, you'll excuse me, never good from the rear view.

And I must ask because everyone wants to know: What about that Narciso Rodriguez dress in Grant Park? Wonkette called it "hell-colored." Sixty-five percent of those polled by People.com said they hated the dress. Tight satin? Beading? The obi waist? The weird little cardigan? Mrs. Obama, black with red is too jarring a color combination for a first lady. It's too dramatic. It recalls an eerie portrait by Goya or a costume from Tosca or Carmen. All too fiery when we want you to soothe. Especially in an image that will be beamed around the world and live online forever.

By now, I imagine you must find the comparisons to Jacqueline Kennedy flattering but tiring. At 44, you will be the youngest first lady since Camelot; the comparisons are inevitable. That doesn't make them accurate.

Like Kennedy, you clearly understand the power of clothes to telegraph messages. In the midst of Sarah Palin's Wardrobegate, you wore wore inexpensive J. Crew separates on The Tonight Show, telling Jay Leno, "You can get a lot of great stuff online. ("All Politics Aside … this outfit gets our vote" reads a current J. Crew ad, an effort to cash in on your endorsement.) Another savvy choice: You wore evening pajamas by Isabel Toledo for a fundraiser hosted by Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour in New York last June. Toledo is an insider's designer; all black was a smart choice for meeting fashion deities (and the pope.)

Like Jackie Kennedy, you understand that dressing for your audience is important. But that's where the comparison ends. Where Kennedy's wardrobe was constant, a calculated piece of stagecraft, your style is more casual and more spontaneous. Which makes it much more interesting.

Jackie's White House wardrobe was essentially custom work from one designer, Oleg Cassini; you buy off the rack. Jackie bought clothes and returned them after wearing them. What you wear, you own. Jackie often spent tens of thousands of dollars in one shot; no one could accuse you of lavish spending.

It seems, happily, that we are more obsessed with your wardrobe than you are. Surely you are less fixated than the proprietors of MrsO, an obsessive new blog devoted to your sartorial choices. But I'd like to leave you with a few specific thoughts. (Like you, I'm sure, I hate it when people bring me a problem without bringing me a resolution.)

It’s easy for the Gucci handbags to be Depressing

The Gucci handbag  is so frigging cute that I don’t even know what to do with myself. I was staring at it dreamily for about five minutes before I even started writing this.

The Gucci handbag opens through a snap closure and would show enough space from the Gucci handbag’s  dimension. It also has a zipped pocket that sits on the silk lining for additional storage. The double handles are of seven inches drop, which then gives you option of whether to carry it over your shoulders or arm.
It’s saved from being bland for several reasons. One of them,  The same goes for the shoulder strap, which gives the elegant silhouette a more modern twist. The palette here saves the Gucci handbag from being a dude as well. Silver links alternate with darker grey, the pattern almost reminds me of barbed wire … and I like that. A lot.

Two inside zip pockets ,Cellphone/multifunction pockets ,Ring to clip an accessory or keyfob ,Zip top closure ,Fabric Lining ,Leather with braided strap detail.

It is designed with a large side bow, plus it also has some gathers on the front for added style.

First of all, I absolutely adore the color of this Gucci handbag. It’s so easy for grey bags to be depressing, if they don’t have a metallic sheen. This one could have been in even more danger of doing so because the accents and details are primarily grey as well.

The Summer Weekend Wardrobe: What Are You Wearing For July 4?

Dolls I hope your immediate future holds some corn on the cob, sparklers, a little backyard BBQ action, maybe even a dip in a lake, a snooze in a hammock, or a big old lobster. As for my holiday weekend, a few girlfriends and I are headed for the surf and sun (fingers crossed!) of Southampton, and here's what I'm packing...

I've always prided myself on my light packing strategy, but this weekend will be busy (one dinner out, one backyard BBQ, two days at the beach, probably post-dinner cocktails one night, and definitely a brunch) and I've decided to put full looks together at home in NYC so I have time to relax and have fun. I'm bringing two dresses, two tops, one skirt, two bikinis, and one caftan. Plus flip flops, one flat sandal, one wedge, PJs and underwear, and an extra beach bag and clutch packed inside my real bag.

I bought this top at the Brooklyn Flea Market a little while ago, and 4th of July weekend feels like exactly the right time for it to make its debut. It's my hippie road trip top--and I can wear the APC denim skirt again to the beach on Sunday.

Tonight we'll probably go to Montauk, which is more surfer country than Hamptons ritziness, so I don't want to look decked. I never go anywhere without a little white cotton dress in summer (this one was less than $40 at Urban Outfitters), and I also love to pack a pair of wedges--they add a little height, but are still casual and cute. High heels sinking into the grass = not cool.

Here's what I plan to wear to the beach on Saturday: Remember I got this caftan at the DIVAS Shop for Opera event? I feel like Blanche Devereaux from the Golden Girls in it and that makes me laugh. I'm also packing the Tuccia di Capri sandals I had made at Henri Bendel, which will be my go-to casual flats for the weekend.

Saturday night will be a little dressier, so I'm trying out the neon trend in this Banana Republic Monogram dress (it's kinda shocking pink in person--the lighting in this photo isn't great). I topped it off with a studded belt I bought at Trash & Vaudeville and a simple patent clutch to stash my stuff in whilst I probably get rowdy on a dancefloor.

I'm getting into the patriotic spirit in my Sunday casual daytime/beach outfit: The same denim skirt from Friday, a little 3/4 sleeve striped top, and a beach bag actually made from the recycled sail of a boat! I'll probably wear this home or throw on a clean T-shirt and the same skirt.

And that, girls, is my 4th of July weekend wardrobe! Are you heading to a beach somewhere? Having a family picnic or a BBQ with the neighbors? What will you wear? Share! Plus...shop for some of my favorite stuff from the greatest all-American designers now:

Everyday fashion in the good old midwest

I really have/had no intention of ever posting any style pics of myself, but I guess I'm warming up to the idea...not.   BUT perusing through all those fabulous fashion blogs out there, it just seems like so much fun to share, right??

So, here I am to share...style in the midwest.  I use to plan my outfit for the day, but nowadays I'd rather sleep!  Don't get too excited, my style's not that crazy.  In fact, it's almost to the other exteme...simple.   I like my basics and my basic colors.

So today it was POURING in Chicago. As I was about to get out of my car, I started to think about my super-long, super-wide trouser jeans that were undoubtedly about to get soaked (wet jeans = dirt/mud over the lower 1/4 of your pants, not to mention droopy drawers -- not a good look). So, in a moment of necessary innovation and practicality, I cuffed and pegged my jeans to keep them out of the puddles and, VOILA!, I created my own harem pants!  Who knew?

Fabulous Gucci handbag

We all knew Gucci handbags would be pushing their successful ‘Indy’ bag this fall. This large gucci handbags could be used perfectly as a weekend carryall, whether for downtown break or for out of the country trips. The black patent leather should already make it a classic piece that could go pretty well from seasons to seasons.

You don’t have to spend too much on such luxurious looking Gucci handbag as this is ironically priced cheap. It is of patent leather, and although neutral, its ultra-glossy patent shading makes it look rather elegant along with some gold tone studs. Black patent leather with goldtone hardware.

This Gucci handbag is also in a magnetic press stud fastening and has a fully lined interior with extra inside compartments that will surely add to the functionality that its size already gives, and letting you fill it with your essentials and beyond.

And since it is in neutral tone, this would surely be very easy to match with your every ensemble. Pairing it up with smart casual look would also be fine, so as to pull off a stylish and sophisticated weekend look around town.

The fabulous Gucci handbag deserves to be coveted by fashion-forward women everywhere as I’m certain it will be.
