How to Dress for the Business World

1. Treat your business clothing as an investment and choose wisely. Make sure you buy classic styles that suit your body shape, are comfortable, have quality workmanship and quality material. This is no time to try the latest fads. Take your time and shop around for the best price and the best service. Be aware of the return policy and if possible purchase your wardrobe items at a store that can do professional alternations if necessary.

2. For business situations match your handbag, shoes and belt. Black shoes should be matched with a black handbag. This is not a time to get creative with your accessories or to wear colored shoes.

3. Do not neglect your outerwear. Purchase a good quality coat that can be worn with either pants or a skirt. For cooler weather don't neglect your outdoor footwear. For skirts choose long knee-high boots.

4. Keep shoes and boots in a good state of repair. Scuffed shoes with worn heels will ruin the look of your outfit.

5. To complete your look choose soft leather gloves that will add a nice touch as well as keep your hands from getting chapped.

6. Choose clothing material that reflects the season. Heavy fabrics and tweeds are best for Fall and Winter and will look out of place during Summer, as light linen fabrics will look out of place during Winter.

7. Always wear a belt where there are belt loops. Choose a good quality leather belt and don't be tempted to wear a flashy or plastic belt. If you don't like belts choose pants without loops.

Solutions for irritated skin

Last year I began waxing my eyebrows. Since then I have experienced a lot of skin irritation in the eyebrow area as hairs grow back; in addition, some of the hairs are sticking straight out, are very brittle and are not lying flat.

I consulted dermatologist Dana Sachs, who suggested that the irritation could be due to partial removal of the top layer of skin (epidermis) along with the hair, a common hazard of waxing. Also, some products that contain ingredients like glycolic acid or topical retinoids, which remove some of the top layer of skin, will aggravate your symptoms.

The first thing to do is stop getting your eyebrows waxed. Your skin is too sensitive. Then follow my threefold plan of attack:

Moisturize: To ease the brittleness of your brow hairs and to train them into a smoother, more flattering shape, try moisturizing the area just as you do your skin. Massage an emollient cream, pressing down in a smooth flat motion from the inner to outer area, spending a full minute on each side. (Make sure you massage in an upward and outward stroke.)
Condition: Treat your brows to your conditioner in the shower. After you wash and rinse your hair, massage a tiny amount of hair conditioner into your brows and leave it on.
Coax: To help coax brittle brow hairs in the right direction, use the old-fashioned secret of many makeup artists: Wax pomade, also called moustache wax, is thick and gummy and works miracles -- but you must only use a teeny bit. Follow these steps: First, rub a smidgen between your fingers to melt it and make it soft. Press it into the brows. With a disposable mascara wand or extra-firm toothbrush, brush the wax through your brows, pushing flat and outward.

10 Secrets of Timeless Style

Designer Gayla Bentley loves necklines: "V necklines, portrait necklines...cuts that emphasize femininity and decolletage," said Gayla.

One of the first steps to building a timeless wardrobe is to choose clothes that look great on you; flattering necklines are key because they bring attention to your face and decolletage, a Gayla Bentley signature.

The Houston-based designer uses what she calls "basic, but sassy" versatile pieces -- sized 2-28 -- that look great on real women's bodies and work well with women's hectic lifestyles.

Why do so many fashion industry types wear head-to-toe black? Because monochromatic looks are universally flattering.

You don't necessarily have to wear black to get the chic effect, although darker colors are the most slimming.

Gayla Bentley, whose wardrobing system relies on versatile feminine pieces, urges clients to "go monochromatic from the neck down" for maximum flattery.

A streamlined color choice eliminates one of the biggest problems Gayla sees on women today: "Too many focal points...there's babydolls, stilettos, overly descriptive handbags."

Before she was a fashion designer, Gayla Bentley spent years in the retail trenches (Saks Fifth Avenue, no less) helping high-end customers put together flattering looks. This first-hand view of how women shop, try on and wear their purchases has helped Gayla develop her timeless collections.

Simple elegant lines are everywhere in Gayla's collections, like this off-shoulder tunic top that skims the body.

Layered looks are more than just about covering up. Instead, three-piece dressing (tank/jacket/pant, tank/skirt/shawl, etc.) is all about creating movement in clothing, an essential component of timeless style, according to Gayla Bentley.

This chic approach to getting dressed is heavily influenced by Gayla's love of Paris and the way Parisian women dress. Even her company's slogan of L.I.P.S. (Live in Personal Style) reflects her belief that women should find their own unique look instead of just following trends.

The inspiration for a line of great-fitting (and looking) coordinates came in 2001 when Gayla Bentley went looking for elegant clothes for her curvy figure that would also travel well. Russell Bentley, Gayla's husband who co-founded the company, says "she's her own best customer."

A style all of our own

As Rosemount Australian Fashion Week enters its teens the event is now a destination for international buyers.

On Monday more than 100 fashion designers from Australia, New Zealand, Thailand and India will begin showing their wares at Rosemount Australian Fashion Week's spring-summer 2008 collections. In the front rows, next to the media and celebrities, local and international buyers will be poised with order books open, hoping to spot hot sellers.

It's 13 years since the first Fashion Week and since then Australian designers have won favour with retailers worldwide. Austrade says fashion exports contribute about $240 million a year to Australia's economy.

Ask industry players the world over what they know about Australian fashion and you can bet they talk about our surf wear and swimwear and will name labels such as Quiksilver and Rip Curl. They are also likely to mention our model exports such as Elle Macpherson and Gemma Ward as well as models-of-the-moment Catherine McNeil and Abbey-Lee Kershaw. Some might go on to list Collette Dinnigan, Ksubi, Sass & Bide and denim label 18th Amendment.

"Australia, like Brazil, is a place we look to for inspiration for swimwear," says Anna Laub, a London-based editor at trend forecaster wgsn.com. "You guys are always going to do much better swimwear and summer clothes in general because you're all spending much more time in the sun. The street style in places like Sydney is also very fashion-forward: people are always sporting the hottest looks straightaway."

Elizabeth Charles, an expat who owns eponymous boutiques in New York and San Francisco, has been a regular at Australian Fashion Week.

"It's the unusual details and fabric combinations that make Australian-designed clothing so interesting and alluring," she says. "Although Aussies are designing for the opposite season, designers often source their fabrics from Italy and France which leads to unusual fabric combinations and atypical colour choices for the season. Plus a laid-back attitude and great weather produce some courageous designs and unique combinations."

Stocking Australian and New Zealand designers has succeeded for Charles, with USA Today recently profiling her stores by featuring looks from Zimmermann, Akira, Yeojin Bae and Anna Thomas. This year Charles won't be making the trip but will place orders based on runway shots.

"Sass & Bide are the biggest regular Australian draw on the fashion week calendar here in New York; they have loyal retailers and fans here, " says Colin Bertram, a former Sydney fashion editor who is a managing editor at the New York Daily News.

"What sets Aussie fashion apart is the ability of our designers and stylists to reinterpret trends and give them a fresh twist.

"That said, style in Australia always strikes me as being thrown together, which can be a good and bad thing. When good, it has an effortless quality. When bad, it can look very contrived and desperate to be 'of the moment'."

One of Australia's biggest commercial success stories is Lisa Ho, who, along with her own label, also owns Third Millennium and Mad Cortes. With boutiques across Australia and customers worldwide, the fashion veteran believes we should be viewed in our own right and not compared to European and American industries.

"We are relatively young and new and I think events such as Australian Fashion Week do educate the general public about the industry," Ho says. "As a result I think appreciation of fashion in this country is far greater than it used to be."

Eyebrow Waxing

All about waxing your eyebrows.
Waxing is a quick and relatively easy alternative to plucking your eyebrows. Most beauty experts recommend getting your eyebrows waxed professionally but that can be expensive - up to around $10-$15 dollars depending on the salon. If you are confident and then here are some tips for waxing your eyebrows yourself.

Start by prepping the eyebrow
Brush the brush into place with toothbrush or clean mascara wand, so that their natural shape is neatly defined. Next, apply an astringent such as witch hazel to anesthetize the skin under the brow. Discover your natural brow shape by standing several feet away from a mirror, and following these simple steps

The length of the eyebrow
Hold a ruler parallel to your nose, and level with the inner corner of the eye, to work out where the brow should begin. If your eyes are close together, make the gap between the brows wider. If your eyes are far apart, don't wax the start line of the brow too much so that they are closer together. Mark the correct point with a dot.

The curve of the eyebrow
You can assess where the highest point of the curve/ arch should be by holding a ruler from the edge of the nostril past the outer edge of the iris (the colored part of the eye) and up to the eyebrow. Mark the spot with a dot.

Now line up the dots in a gentle arch to draw on the ideal shape of the eyebrow that you want to achieve. This will give you a guideline to go by when applying the wax. You should aim for a smooth arched brow that tapers slightly at the outer ends.

What to consider when applying the wax
I recommend that you buy a professional waxing kit - basically a jar or tub of wax which can be warmed up in boiling water and applied with a small applicator or spatula, and (usually muslin) removal strips. Each product varies slightly, so be sure to read the manufacturers directions carefully

Warm up the wax to optimum temperature and use the small spatula to apply a thin layer of wax to the growth. Make sure that you only use a small amount of wax on the spatula to avoid the wax dripping when it is applied. Apply wax with the hair growth under the eyebrow, (i.e. in the same direction that the hair grows in). Be careful a little goes a long way and make sure to avoid letting the wax dry

The hair removal process
Never wax above the eyebrow, only shape from below. Waxing from under the brow will widen your eyes and help to get the line even. This will make you look younger and much more glamorous if done correctly! As soon as it is applied remove the wax against the hair growth, (i.e. in the opposite direction that the hair grows in). This is done by gently smoothing a piece of cotton muslin over the waxed area, pulling the skin taut with one hand, and pulling the muslin off with the other.

It is a good idea to take a little hair off at a time, especially if you have fairly this growth. You will be surprised how much difference a little hair removal will make to your appearance.

The final step
Any straggly hairs left over after waxing can be easily plucked out using a set of good tweezers. Apply a soothing balm like tea tree oil onto the area afterwards. You should avoid direct sunlight, acid based facial treatments, and liquid makeup for several hours.

To give the gorgeous new eyebrow shape emphasis, use an eyebrow pencil or tinted brow shadow to subtly fill in any gaps, and even out the natural color tone. Congratulations you have successfully waxed your own eyebrows!

Diamonds Are Forever

Diamond jewelry: diamond rings, diamond earrings, diamond pendants and diamond bracelets are some of the most sought after gemstone creations. Your eyes tell you how beautiful a piece of diamond jewelry is, but how do you know you are getting your money's worth?

A little knowledge can go a long way to help you purchase a beautiful piece of diamond jewelry at a fair price.

Diamond Jewelry 101

A diamond's value is based on four criteria: color, cut, clarity, and carat. The clarity and color of a diamond usually are graded. However, scales are not uniform: a clarity grade of "slightly included" may represent a different grade on one grading system versus another, depending on the terms used in the scale. Make sure you know how a particular scale and grade represent the color or clarity of the diamond you're considering. A diamond can be described as "flawless" only if it has no visible surface or internal imperfections when viewed under 10-power magnification by a skilled diamond grader.

As with other gems, diamond weight usually is stated in carats. Diamond weight may be described in decimal or fractional parts of a carat. If the weight is given in decimal parts of a carat, the figure should be accurate to the last decimal place. For example, ".30 carat" could represent a diamond that weighs between .295 - .304 carat. Some retailers describe diamond weight in fractions and use the fraction to represent a range of weights. For example, a diamond described as 1/2 carat could weigh between .47 - .54 carat. If diamond weight is stated as fractional parts of a carat, the retailer should disclose two things: that the weight is not exact, and the reasonable range of weight for each fraction or the weight tolerance being used.

Some diamonds may be treated to improve their appearance in similar ways as other gemstones. Since these treatments improve the clarity of the diamond, some jewelers refer to them as clarity enhancement. One type of treatment - fracture filling - conceals cracks in diamonds by filling them with a foreign substance. This filling may not be permanent and jewelers should tell you if the diamond you're considering has been fracture-filled.

Another treatment - lasering - involves the use of a laser beam to improve the appearance of diamonds that have black inclusions or spots. A laser beam is aimed at the inclusion. Acid is then forced through a tiny tunnel made by the laser beam to remove the inclusion. Lasering is permanent and a laser-drilled stone does not require special care.

While a laser-drilled diamond may appear as beautiful as a comparable untreated stone, it may not be as valuable. That's because an untreated stone of the same quality is rarer and therefore more valuable. Jewelers should tell you whether the diamond you're considering has been laser-drilled.

Imitation diamonds, such as cubic zirconia, resemble diamonds in appearance but are much less costly. Certain laboratory-created gemstones, such as lab-created moissanite, also resemble diamonds and may not be adequately detected by the instruments originally used to identify cubic zirconia. Ask your jeweler if he has the current testing equipment to distinguish between diamonds and other lab-created stones.

When shopping for diamond jewelry online, apply these tips.

1. Shop with companies you know or do some homework before buying to make sure a company is legitimate before doing business with it.

2. Take advantage of information and referrals from an internet company you have come to trust.

3. Get the details about the product, as well as the merchant's refund and return policies, before you buy.

4. Look for an address to write to or a phone number to call if you have a question, a problem or need help.

Fads and Fashions

"Following the crowd" is something that we have all been guilty of. But new investors are more likely to "follow the crowd" and fall in love with the latest fad. This is a great risk, and a dangerous one. Newer investors tend to be particularly attracted to fads and fashions in investing. Remember the internet bubble back in the 90s? So many people lost money buying in at the end of the cycle. Of course, those who bought in early made great profits, but these investors often bought in on fundamentals, not hype.

As investors, we look toward the "next big thing." Sometimes this motivation leads us right into a Red Alert zone. The investment mess from the internet bubble is just one example. History is full of stories like the Tulip Craze in Holland back in the 17th century. These crazes cause people to follow each other over an investment cliff without thinking, like lemmings on a Science Channel special.

Think about the clothing industry and its fashions. History shows that the "latest" trend lasts only a short time. So, while investing in trendy clothing stores may bring short-term success, the failure is often even more spectacular?and inevitable. Typically, by the time we learn about a "new" trend, it's already "so last season".

We can even get hurt in fashion trends that are not immediately visible. Oh sure, athletic shoes are every bit as popular as they've ever been. Or are they? Over the past 5 years, hiking shoes have snuck up on the "sneaks" in popularity. That's right, hiking boots and shoes are in; tennis shoes and sneakers are out. But instead of buying stocks from Timberland, think about Nike as a long-term stable investment instead. Anyhoo, it's probably too late to buy Timberland now. The fashion trend has already had its day. But because of this experience we can expect new footwear trends to show up. It may be too late to adapt, it's nearly impossible to keep up, and by the time we figure out where the trend is headed, we've probably missed the stock price rise.

So how do we avoid the mistake of buying out of sheer excitement? The answer is simple. Look for companies that are bor-ing. Investing in apparently dull companies can actually be beneficial. Boring companies normally don't have share prices that are puffed-up by mood swings and emotional buying. We're simply buying an income stream - the most affordable way to invest. Also, the company's future prospects are more secure, because they aren't at risk of missing a major shift.

Okay let's face it. Owning a firm in Ohio that makes widgets for industrial fasteners is not as "cool" as discussing your ownership of Tiffany's, or the latest nanotechnology corporation in Silicon Valley. But guess what? That widget-producing firm in the heartland will be more dependable, and will probably provide a better return on your money. And isn't that why you're investing anyway?

Now, we're not telling you to avoid trends altogether. Trends are important to investing. In fact, if you can get in ahead of the curve, there are great short-term opportunities when you buy in to fads. But here, we're usually playing the "greater fool theory": we assume that someone else will pay more than we did, even when we know it isn't worth it. I mean, many of us made money in the internet days playing this game, but if someone else saw the fad first, we could be wasting our money.

There's no harm in buying stocks that might become "popular" in the future, if you can predict future fads, and then sell them after they become overpriced. But to remain sane and safe, stick to companies with solid fundamentals: earnings, stable growth, strong balance sheet, etc. In other words, only buy companies that are good values with good prospects. If a company carries some attraction for fad-followers, so much the better. But don't pay extra just because of the "bling-bling" and the "glam" appeal. Fads and fashions are unpredictable - make no mistake. Don't buy the stock unless you'd want to own it even if your fashion prediction falls flat. If it still looks good - even if your guesses about tastes are wrong - then maybe it's a worthy holding.

Successful investing is not just finding profit opportunities, but keeping your losses to a minimum. Don't buy stocks that have no substance. Stay away from the bling!

How to Choose Lingerie

In my business, I talk to a lot of gals and guys about lingerie. Ladies, if you heard what the guys say, you'd feel a lot better about your bodies. And, men, if you heard what the gals say, that last piece of lingerie you bought her.....well...she used it to decorate her shoelaces. Men want skimpy. Women want enhancement.

So how do you pick something sexy that both of you will like? The answer is simple. Be aware of the other's preferences. Men and women are different in what turns them on romantically.

Usually, when a man strolls into my store, he walks in, buys something, walks out. When he needs help he's specific in his needs. "Miss, do you have a piece of string, size medium, in Jeep Cherokee white, for my wife? It's our anniversary."

Men want to see skin. Lots of it. and, the more skin they want to see, the more likely it is that it's going to be skin that's bumpy or birthmarky. Women don't want guys to see those parts. Most women have at least one of these parts. Sometimes, it's even part of a set. Like many women, the part that I'm trying to hide is my stomach. To ensure that my belly's seen by as few people as possible I've tattooed these instructions on it: to be viewed only by medical personnel who are removing something underneath..

When a woman buys lingerie, she is trying to accomplish at least one of three objectives: show something, hide something or pretend you've got something. The skinny girls usually don't want to hide anything; they want to show stuff, and pretend they've got stuff. The bigger girls want to show and hide stuff. And, if the stuff is supposed to be big and it's little, that's when you buy the stuff to pretend you've got it. And, if the stuff is big and that stuff looks good big, that's when you show it. And, if it's big and it should be small, cover it up. Guys, we work so hard to please you, that we not only cover up the big parts that don't look good big, we actually try to squish them in. That's why women go to the bathroom in pairs. To make sure no one explodes.

Women who have a C cup or larger need support when they're wearing lingerie. Applauding is not what I mean by support. Guys think architectural engineering. You know the way those cables hold the Golden Gate Bridge up? Bra straps work the same way, except you don't have all those cars going through.. And, underwires are like support beams. Without basic support, a structure will fall. Think about that Leaning Tower of Pisa. It looks like it will topple over any moment. That's the fate awaiting large chested women without the proper bra support. Years from now, they'll be leaning over from the weight of it all.

So, the bottom line is that women want to look beautiful for their sweeties. And, men think that a woman's bare skin is what looks sexiest on her. Keep that in mind, folks, next time you go shopping for lingerie.

Hey, wait a minute......my honey just bought me a gift. It's....what appears to be..... lingerie. Hmmmmmm. What the?! ...... It's a piece of string... with a neon feather. I guess it'll work as an anklet. For my sister's next birthday.
